Flag seeds and celestial fruit

The flora in Taiwan can often look a little different to back home. Recently it seems that someone planted flag seeds all over the city and blossoming season has arrived.

These children have already picked flag blossoms in a variety of colours. Here they are excitedly waving them all around - perhaps they will make a flag chain a la daisies.

I'm not sure what strange seed varietal produced these botanicals. A large number of people seem however to be watching them grow.

Yes, a beautiful afternoon for gardening at CKS Memorial Hall.

These readily available local delicacies are the dragonfruit (pinky red) and starfruit (yellow). I have often seen them at the fruit vendors but this is the first time I have succumbed to their piao liang exteriors.

Cut across, it soon becomes apparent why this is named starfruit.

This was a bit more of a surprise! Sweet, juicy, and reminiscent of a kiwifruit.

you can get starfruit at Oz too, so good.
Don't forget to try lychee & longan "dragon eye" and water apple. Sooo good.
Also really good in Taiwan is fresh bamboo shoots, goes well sliced and with mayonnaise (or I think Japanese Mayonnaise - yum yum sauce)
*drool*

Ah yes, the big double ten military parade, last year was a doozy, ol' Chen wanted to go out with a bang so all the good hardware came out (i've got some pic's up). From one kiwi to another - the kiwifruit here (in taiwan) is much better than back home - all the best gear is exported! Lillian, yep Oz has a good selection of tropical fruit too (fresh fruit in NZ supermarkets during winter will seem so depressing when you head back), but Taiwan is amazing, fruitshops hear offering seasonal delights of such quality - mmm now I'm drooling too.....

I had the linked to your blog from David on Formosa. I enjoy reading your article as u keep them simple and precise. Don't even need a dictionary to look up vocabulary.(cause i am a Taiwanese)

For fruit, you must try citrus fruits during the winter season. There is local kind of tangerine and orange available in Taiwan now and taste different comparing those of yours back at home. Tangerine - you must try Mao Ku Gan, smaller than regular size of tangerine, and much sweeter.

For those flag and military stuff rehearsal, they are all for the date 10 OCT. It's a public holday, just like 4 JUL, independence day in the US. If you have time, you can go to " office of the president" this Friday (10 oCT), you can experience the activity on your own. and normally there will be a firework island wide through the main show is in Chia Yi this year.
